Sonnet 35

To give myself the spirit you became
I had to let some pieces of me go.
I'm not complaining. I'll take all the blame
for all the flaws I do and do not show.

I'm rather good at losing, though, so soon
I should be back around your neighborhood
unless I get distracted by the moon
(which, trust me, would be only for the good).

The ghost of you will always give me pause
as I in turn will someday do, old friend,
so like you, be condemned for it, with cause.

I've even got your eyes now, dark and gaunt.
Fill them with your tears as I descend
into the holes in me that you still haunt.
