Severe Conviction

Posted in villanelle by maggie on 2009/05/11

Her tongue is cut off, exiled from all ears,
no pardon their severe conviction spares.
Convicted by a jury of her peers,

her word accepts the judgment of the shears.
With no parole to wind up her affairs,
her tongue is cut off, exiled from all ears.

The blade emancipates them from her snares,
her inner voices from her breathing tears.
Convicted by a jury of her peers,

her judgment earns no sympathy, no tears,
just insults, curses, threats, rebuke and sneers.
Her tongue is cut off, exiled from all ears.

Her judge affirms the blackest of her fears -
fair justice with cruel bias in equal shares,
convicted by a jury of her peers.

Their taunts shoot darts, their criticism spears,
piercing her lip for exhaling foreign airs.
Her tongue is cut off, exiled from all ears,
Convicted by a jury of her peers.
