Afterthought 17—Contemplation on Dusk

Posted in sonnet by maggie on 2014/12/05

How could you let him strip you of your wings
so you might wallow in his bed? Why did
you let him blind your eyes, to keep you hid
from your own vision, one of his bleak things?

How dared you let him choke the voice that sings
a song you now can't hear? Why let him rid
your word its passions once held close, now slid
into loose lies and vague meanderings?

The planets, all in retrograde too soon,
it must have been, right?—backfire from a shot
against a love you dared let him impugn,
to whom it was he killed not giving thought.
You wane your way to dawn, so like the moon
you look around for, so sincere, yet not.

Matthew 13:46

Posted in nothing special by maggie on 2012/02/21

You'll not find me mentioned in prayer
nor scripture, not even the parts on sin.
I'm not there.

They had to write me in
the margins, in cryptic glyph
with tiny letters, pencil thin.

I'm still not noticed. If
you were to sell all you have
and buy me for a lover's gift,

there'd barely be a speck of dust
          to use, to save.

Guarded Post

I'm pulled aside. My card's expired.
Officially illegal here,
I'm asked to leave. Since I'll get fired,
I'm pulled aside. My card's expired
with no prospects I'll be rehired.
So even though my record's clear,
I'm pulled aside. My card's expired,
officially illegal here.

Unnamed Island

Posted in nothing special by maggie on 2010/04/14

Strange as the eastern sky
    is the time we've broken,
wrong as the water's edge
    are the dawns we've spoiled.

Down on the street below
    you remain still standing,
waiting release to stay
    when you're free to go.

Some hands are meant to reach.
     Others touch.
You and I have us one of each,
     hurts that much.

Which corner do I turn
    to your unnamed island?
How do I touch the air
    where your word won't lie?

been had

Posted in villanelle by maggie on 2009/09/15
been had

it's nothing worth me getting mad
for being taken for the dupe
but just like always i've been had

this friendship thing, it's just a fad
so what if i'm not in the loop
it's nothing worth me getting mad

and most of you are really rad
i feel almost one of the group
but just like always i've been had

i know, my ranting's worse than sad
which goes to show how low i'll stoop
it's nothing worth me getting mad

i'd hoped it wouldn't all be bad
that all them stares weren't just to snoop
but just like always i've been had

(excluding you, for you i'm glad...)
i'm acting like a nincompoop
it's nothing worth me getting mad
but just like always i've been had

What I Could Feel

Posted in villanelle by maggie on 2009/09/10
What I Could Feel

I can't believe in those for whom I lust,
convinced I've never known what I could feel,
then lose my touch for those in whom I trust.

Smell my breath, it's clouds of smoke and dust
from all the lies my make-believes conceal.

I can't believe in those for whom I lust -
my longings for them choke me with disgust.

Why mutilate my own pride's shy appeal,
then lose my touch for those in whom I trust?

It's natural, when my pride's all solid rust
and those in whom I trust aren't in the deal.

I can't believe in those for whom I lust,
but disbelief's erotic, I'll adjust -

I'll force what little feeling I reveal,
then lose my touch for those in whom I trust.

So I'll let mine be handled if I must,
just don't believe me if I call it real.
I can't believe in those for whom I lust,
then lose my touch for those in whom I trust.
